I started to feel it about a month ago.
The tension of wanting to keep going alongside the energy that was clearly waning and descending. A season of completion and transition from outward growth to inward regeneration.
As the leaves began to fall heavier and everything started to slow down, my mind settled too. There’s no shortage of ideas collecting.
I’m thinking about the seeds I’ll plant for next year, literally and metaphorically. An abundance of creative ideas is like a tree that produced fruit beyond what can be harvested, or a flower that has dropped more seeds than what will actually germinate. Not all the ideas can come to life, or will come to life. There’s also hibernation. It can’t all happen right now.
I trust that we’re all channels of life force, and there’s an unlimited amount of creativity that will move through. How do we keep the channel open and receive? How do we decide what we return to the compost pile, and what we nurture to grow?
I ask for guidance and commune with my intentions. I remember that I’m not here trying to support the ecosystem alone. Like the way each flower contributes what it can and it’s not the only one providing for the pollinators, I can let go of the pressure to do it all.
Working with nature gives me perspective on the timeline of things too, with a more embodied understanding of cycles, and what will need to wait until “next season.”
This invites rest. A fertile void is felt. It’s the antithesis of cultural conditioning to overwork and be productive in linear, mechanical ways.
There is space for death, endings, and darkness. Can we learn new perspectives and new ways of being in the cocoon? Can we honor these cycles within ourselves and in nature?
At this moment when the plants have let go, I’ve gathered seeds for next season. It’s their offering. And the beauty and miracle is that, all at once, I hold both death and creation in my hands.
To this… and to a season of thank you’s.
